A 45-year-old career criminal told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he was now too old to be getting into trouble and was in the process of starting a new life.

This coming from the man as he admitted he stole alcohol from Shopping Centre and the Modern Mart earlier this year.

Ali Virgil, of Pembroke, said the reason why he stole the six-pack of Carlsberg beer and the bottle of strawberry flavoured vodka on January 28 and January 31 this year was because he was despondent over losing his apartment and possessions as a result of being sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment for a similar offence.

“I’d given up but I’ve made a complete turnaround,” he told Mr. Warner. “I have retired from pilfering anything else in life.”

Virgil went on to say that he was now living with his mother and was gainfully employed as a painter even suggesting Mr. Warner to sentence him to five years behind bar, suspended for five years.

As he told the man that he’d heard him make these claims before, Mr. Warner sentenced Virgil to nine months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.
