A 35-year-old Southampton man was remanded into custody pending drug assessment and social inquiry reports after he admitted stealing a bag from a tourist as she swam at Horseshoe Bay Beach over the weekend.
Prosecutor Takiyah Burgess told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that on May 24, Karen Sutton and her husband went swimming at the popular beach; leaving her bag on her towel near the life guard station.
As they swam, Paul Williams was spotted removing the bag, which contained a quantity of items and cash valued at $1,075, and running towards the bushes near the beach.
He was pursued and subsequently dropped the bag but not before attempting to make good his escape by jumping in the ocean before being apprehending by the lifeguard on duty.
Mr. Warner ordered Williams reappear in two weeks when the reports are expected to be complete.
