Dockyard security boost

A new network of  CCTV cameras will be installed around Dockyard to bolster security.

Work has already begun on the project that will see around 20 cameras erected in different locations.

The system will provide 24-hour coverage and will be manned between 8am and 4pm seven days a week.

WEDCo general manager Andrew Dias told the Bermuda Sun: “This is the first time we will have a comprehensive network of cameras in Dockyard.

“Previously we have had a few isolated cameras at the port around the cruise terminals. But this new network will cover the whole of Dockyard.”

Vehicle recognition

A handful of cameras will  be fitted with vehicle licence recognition technology, enabling authorities to keep tabs on every vehicle that arrives and departs from Dockyard.

Cameras will also be installed in the Clock Tower Mall as well as at the entrance to Dockyard.

Mr Dias added: “As a destination, we continue to grow and we want to make sure that our guests, visitors and tenants are as secure as possible.

“There is obviously a deterrent value associated with CCTV cameras and we have a good working relationship with the police and Customs and other security agents.

“The establishment of a new CCTV network in Dockyard could obviously help all of the above.

“This is an important development as Dockyard is the main cruise ship
port and it will be of benefit to locals as well as visitors.”

The project, which is due to be completed within a month, is the result of a new partnership between WEDCo and the security firm GET Security.

Under the one-year arrangement WEDCo will pay a nominal installation fee as well as a monthly maintenance charge.

The project will involve many of the recently decommissioned cameras, previously used by police, being re-installed within the Dockyard complex.
