Bermudian biker dies after motocross collision (Update 2)
Dale J. Boorman was riding northward alongside the inside of the track at the Moto X Raceway in Pinellas Park when another biker, identified as Matthew Gardner, a 23-year-old Floridian, riding in the opposite direction on the outside edge of the track entered a jump just prior to a turn.
When Mr Gardner went airborne, he entered Mr Boorman’s lane of travel, according to local police. The two collided. Mr Gardner’s bike struck Mr Boorman in the head and upper body. He was pronounced dead at 7:11 pm, according to police. Mr Gardner did not suffer any serious injuries.
Mr Boorman’s father was at the track at the time of the accident.
Pinellas Park Police Department are currently classifying the incident as an accidental death.
Shadow Sports Minister Michael Weeks said on Wednesday "The passing of Dale Boorman is a tragedy and on behalf of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party, we extend condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Boorman. The family has lost a loved one, the motocross world has lost a key member of their sporting fraternity and Bermuda has lost an up and coming talent."
Minister of Community, Culture and Sports Wayne Scott said “On behalf of the Ministry of Community, Culture and Sports, we offer our sincere condolences to the family of Dale Boorman. We were sad to learn of his passing this morning and our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Bermuda has lost a young and talented motorcross rider. We hope that his passion and enthusiasm for the sport will be honoured and remembered by all.”
