A former Attorney General and restless Rotarian was honoured on Friday with the unveiling and dedication of the Walter Maddocks Memorial Rotary clock in the grounds of City Hall.

The landmark also commemorates the work of the Rotary Clubs and their 90 years of service to Bermuda; “a stellar organization committed to helping others” said City of Hamilton Mayor Graeme Outerbridge.

Walter Maddocks, who died in 2011, served as president of the Hamilton Rotary Club in 1973 and District Governor in 1976. However, it was in 1986 that he and his wife Margaret answered the call to dedicate two years of their lives to travelling and fundraising on behalf of the Rotary Clubs in their quest to rid the world of Polio.

At the beginning of the two-year campaign, they set a goal to raise $120 million. Maddocks was so successful at rallying the troops that in 1988 they had raised over $264 million.

Family and friends were in attendance, and Mr Maddocks’s widow Margaret unveiled the memorial clock.
