A British couple who used to live in Bermuda have been arrested as part of an investigation into theft from the Accountant General’s Department and money laundering.

Jeff and Samantha Bevan were arrested by police in Wales as part of a cross-Atlantic investigation into the disappearance of money from Government coffers.

Mr Bevan, 47, and Mrs Bevan, 48, previously lived here and Mr Bevan is believed to have worked in a managerial position for the Bermuda Government.

The Bermuda Sun can also reveal that another man and woman from Leicester, in England, were recently arrested and questioned by officers in connection with the inquiry.

All four suspects have been released on police bail until August.

The Sun can confirm that nobody has been charged with an offence at this time.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police told the Bermuda Sun: “South Wales Police is working alongside Bermuda Police Service following an allegation of theft and money laundering.

“A 47-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman from the Cwmbran area have been arrested and released on police bail.

“A further two suspects from Leicester have been arrested in relation to this incident and also released on bail.

“The alleged offence of theft and money laundering is believed to have taken place at the Accountant General’s Office of the Government of Bermuda.”

The exact sum of money allegedly stolen has not been revealed, but it is believed to be a significant amount.

The Accountant General’s department is responsible for all monies paid into or out of the government and monitors the funds in all accounts.

The department is also charged with managing the government’s working capital to ensure it remains “sufficiently liquid to cover” operating costs while maximizing return on cash holdings, according to the department’s web site.

Curtis Stovell is the current Accountant General.

The Accountant General’s Department declined to comment.

The Bermuda Sun reached out to the Bermuda Police Service who confirmed this was an ongoing investigation, but would not comment further on the matter.
