Turning around in the middle of the road in order to retrieve his cap cost a Warwick man $1,500 in Magistrates’ Court this morning as he admitted using offensive words towards a Police officer and escaping lawful custody on June 16.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner heard that on the night in question, 26-year-old Tarik Smith was driving a vehicle travelling west on Crow Lane when he was spotted by Police doing an illegal U-turn in the road.
When stopped, Smith told the officers that he had dropped his cap and was going to get it.
When Police asked for ID, according to Crown Counsel Maria Sofianos, Smith handed them a license that was too faded to properly identify him.
After his identity was established, Police informed Smith that he had outstanding warrants for his arrest.
It was then he attempted to make good his escape by running away. He was subsequently apprehended and proceeded to curse at a female officer.
Apologising for his actions, Smith told Warner that his actions were inappropriate and that he will not be appearing in court for such behavior again.
Mr. Warner fined the man $1,000 for using offensive words and $500 for escaping unlawful custody.
