Nineteen-year-old Bryce Daniels today began serving a two and a half year prison sentence after he admitted importing cannabis resin and possessing the drug with intent to supply.

Crown counsel Nicole Smith told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that on February 18 this year the St. George’s man flew into the Island aboard a British Airways flight.

Daniels was stopped by Customs Officers after a drug sniffing canine showed interest in the man.

After an initial search of his luggage did not turn up anything, they asked him if he had swallowed any drugs to which he responded that he had not because he knew it would upset his mother greatly.

He subsequently consented to being x-rayed. After being transported to the Lamb Foggo Urgent Care Centre, it was discovered that Daniels had a foreign object in his stomach.

He then admitted he’d swallowed between 90 and 96 cylindrical pellets containing cannabis resin. Eventually Daniels excreted 86 pellets, weighing just under 604 grammes. The drugs had an estimated street value of $60,350.

Daniels also admitted to the officers that this was not the first time he’d imported drugs in that manner and the last time he did so was in December 2013.

When Duty Counsel Bruce Swan requested a pre-sentencing social inquiry report, Mr. Warner refused, calling the action “a callous importation” before handing Daniels 30 months behind bars.
