A 53-year-old Pembroke man admitted stealing three bags of shrimp from The Marketplace last year, but told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the offence.
Crown counsel Nicole Smith told Mr. Warner that on June 27 last year, Franklin Smith, of Dunscome Lane, was seen in the Hamilton store carrying a brown shopping bag and was spotted by a manager, who believed the man was acting suspiciously.
When Smith made his way to a cashier, he paid for several other items but not three bags of frozen uncooked shrimp that were in the bag. They were valued at $92.90.
As he admitted his guilt, Smith told Mr. Warner that he was sorry and that he was not in his right mind when the incident occurred. He said that he had come from a funeral and his mind was not right because he had been drinking. He said that he had no intentions of stealing the items as he had the means to pay for them at the time.
Mr. Warner fined the man $500.
