A Canadian national began an eight-month stint behind bars today after he admitted importing 885 grammes of cannabis into Bermuda on May 19 this year.

Twenty-three year old Moses Adejumo admitted bringing the drugs into the Island in his luggage after deplaning an Air Canada flight from Toronto.

Crown Cousel Takiyah Burgess told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that the man was stopped for secondary search by HM Customs and it was then that the drugs were found bound in two taped packages concealed under the cloth lining of his suitcase.

The drugs have an estimated street value of $44,250.

Arion Mapp, appearing on behalf of law firm Christopher, Francis, Forrest, asked for Mr. Warner to order a psychiatric report prior to sentencing but his request was flatly denied by the judge.

Mr. Mapp, however, cited the man had fallen on hard times over the last couple of years, including dropping out of law school and losing employment. The court also heard how Adejumo attempted to commit suicide in January 2013.

“He feels like he is a disgrace to his family,” Mr. Mapp added, as Adejumo’s mother and aunt, who flew to the Island from Nigeria, sat in the public gallery.

Adejumo, who did not speak during the proceedings, never revealed who he imported the drugs for.

Mr. Warner sentenced the man to eight months’ imprisonment, with time in custody taken into consideration.
