A 44-year-old Southampton man was remanded into custody this morning after he admitted stealing $700 in cash and jewellery from his mother as she helped him clean his apartment.
On July 5 this year, Lynn Moniz was helping her son, Kevin Boys, clean his apartment when she noticed at one point that he had gone missing. She became suspicious and went to her home next door, to discover her closet light was on. Further examination revealed a pouch containing $700 cash was missing.
When police arrived at her home, they subsequently searched Boys, who had changed his pants. They discovered a pair of gold earrings and a gold brooch in the pockets of the khakis he was originally wearing. They also found the cleaning cloth Boys was using in his mother’s bedroom.
He initially admitted to Police that he stole the jewellery but denied taking the cash.
Duty Counsel Arisha Flood told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner Boys was sorry for his actions and that he loved his mother dearly. She added the father and grandfather was afflicted by drug addition and stole to support his habit but wanted to change his life around.
Mr. Warner ordered social inquiry and drug assessment reports and remanded Boys into custody until August 7 with the condition that he observes Drug Treatment Court.
The Senior Magistrate added: “This is not a punishment; this is so that he gets serious about treatment. If he doesn’t want to do that, he can do three months’ imprisonment.”
