Earlier today, the Premier and Minister of National Security, the Hon. Michael Dunkley and the Minister of Education and Economic Development, Dr. the Hon. Grant Gibbons welcomed members of the Bermuda Debate Society (BDS) to the Cabinet Office in advance of the students’ trip to Europe.

The team which consists of students Megan Sutcliff, Ciara Burrow and Ryan Robinson Perinchief, will be heading off to the “Heart of Europe Debate Tournament”, which is being held in the Czech Republic from July 10 - July 15, 2014.

And today the Premier and Minister of Education took the opportunity to extend their well wishes, support and encouragement to the young debaters as they embark on what the Premier termed as “an exciting journey of learning and development”.

According to BDS president Marisa Sharpe, this is the first time the BDS has sent a contingent to the European competition. The team, which is being led by coach Christianna Hiles, has spent several months preparing for the event.

Next month (August), two former debate participants, Aliyyah Ahad and Akilah Beckles (also pictured) will be attending the World Schools Debate Competition in Bangkok, Thailand as first time international adjudicators.
