Heron Bay students invite MPs to assembly about government

Primary five students hosted a special assembly this month focusing on government in Bermuda.

The students, of Heron Bay Primary School, have been learning about the subject in their social studies class. As such, the Primary Five teacher, Lauren Botelho, thought it fitting to bring in some members of parliament to help bring the subject alive.  The students had the opportunity to meet Michael Dunkley, Derrick Burgess and Nandi Outerbridge at the assembly. 

“Learning about the government and legislation can seem so abstract to young students. 

“Having people who have first-hand experience in the field was one way to help students gain a better understanding,” said Mrs. Botelho. 

They performed a short skit, demonstrating all that they have learned in class. After, students interviewed their invited guests about their roles, responsibilities and their insights into government. Primary Five student, Hugo Cailliere, shared how much he learned from the politicians: “I learned that you have to be eighteen years old to become a part of government. I also remember them telling us to take deep breaths and speak from the heart when making a speech.”

“Our assembly was a great showcase of what my students are capable of. Memorizing lines and speaking in front of your country’s leaders is no easy task, but they all rose to the challenge. I’m very proud of them, as is the rest of Heron Bay,” added Botelho.
