Two armed men raided Mr Chicken Express in Devonshire on Friday night.
The duo, who are believed to have been armed with a gun and a knife, burst into the fast food eatery at around 10pm.
They demanded money from members of staff but were forced to flee the scene empty handed.
Police then descended on the establishment at the junction of Upland Street and Watlington Road East.
Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the attempted armed robbery or may have seen people acting suspiciously in the area to contact Central CIU on 295 0011 or Crimestoppers on 800 8477.
A police spokesperson said: "A few minutes after 10pm on Friday night police responded to an attempted robbery that took place at Mr Chicken Express in Devonshire.
"It appears that two males entered the establishment and brandished what appeared to be a firearm and a bladed article and made demands for money. However their attempt was unsuccessful and they made good their escape."
