Mayho, Bonnett open Flying Colours series with a win

The opening races of the 2013 Flying Colours Mountain Bike Race Series were held Sunday.

The Arboretum was the venue and conditions were perfect with plenty of sun, cool temperatures and a light breeze.

The track in the park is quite fast with smooth rolling paths and flowing downhill runs offering the fitter but less technical racers a great chance to jump ahead on points. Many spectators dotted the course offering encouragement.

There were 90 + pre-registration entries received from our online entry form (on www.fattiremassive.com).

A few registered racers did not make it but a few latecomers ‘squeezed in’ on the morning to form the record-setting 94 competitor turnout!

The race format for all classes is against a countdown clock. The object is to complete as many laps as possible in the allotted time with the opportunity to grab extra laps if a racer got past the start / finish before the clock hit zero.

The first race started a little after 9am and was comprised of men and women entries for A, B, and Veteran classes. They ran the same clockwise course that was used during the Small Island Games event which saw them weave back and forth through the Arboretum for approximately one mile a lap.

A class did 50 minutes, B and veterans ran 40 minutes.

The second race at around 10am saw the biggest climb and about 2/10 of a mile deducted from the course.

The classes for both male and female were Novice, Junior 13-15 and Junior 12 and under. The youngest juniors were only 7!

Novice and junior 13-15 ran 30 minutes, Junior under 12 ran 15 minutes

Course details, event pictures and full results may be found on www.fattiremassive.com and fattiremassive’s facebook page.

Our next race is on December 1 at the old  Casemates Prison in Dockyard.
