It was a fine win but not quite enough to topple Neil de ste Croix from the top of the overall standings.
The brand new 1.2 mile course at Lodge Point Park was designed this year, and huge efforts by Chris Roque of Spar Yard Industries, members of FTM, and the Bermuda Hunt Club have yielded an incredible winding series of trails.
The course snakes between abandoned buildings and around the park lagoon through tree tunnels.
As in the previous week’s race, the rainy conditions created another challenge as the corners became slippery with mud.
Despite the blustery, rainy conditions, a strong field of 48 riders turned out to enjoy the new route.
In the Male A class, the contestants blazed around the course for eight gruelling laps, pushing the poor traction to the limit.
Behind Hatherley came Jean Sebastian Lareau, who was followed by Deshi Smith.
In the Male B category, the competition was fierce with several riders swapping position as the race progressed. Ultimately, Daniel Oatley was able to fight off the opposition with Hans Hirschi second and Andrew Hern third.
Alexander Miller led the pack home in the Under-13 Males, with Adrian McPhee second and Manning Smith grabbing the final podium spot.
The Under 13 Females saw Cassy McPhee as the uncontested winner.
Results for 13-16-year-old males were Christian Oatley first and Alex Bordage second.
In the female equivalent, there was drama when Jessie Godfrey’s pedal dropped off. However, James Holloway quickly stepped in and lent her the “Fat Larry” bike —and she finished in style. Alyssa Rowse took third place. Tristan Narraway grabbed second and line honours went to Victoria Davis.
Thomas Dunstan, Craig Ferguson and Jason Thomas were placed first, second and third respectively in the Male Novice Class, with less than 20 seconds between them.
Brittany Uddin was the lone Novice female and completed her laps comfortably.
In Female B class, Ashley Kirkpatrick completed the course to grab 25 points for the win.
Race organiser James Holloway said: “What a season Fat Tire Massive has had. It was the near the end of 2011 when we first got together and had the first plan — to bring Mountain Biking back to Bermuda, and boy we did it.
“Jump to 2013 and pre- season hopes were of at least a 10-per-cent gain in riders. What we ended up with is almost double the numbers — an epic result.
“There are so many great memories from this season.”
Next week’s race is a two- hour endurance event — single entrants only — at Ferry Point Park open to all interested riders. Check out fattiremassive.com for more details.
