One man will cut off his shoulder-length locks to raise money for the St Baldrick’s Foundation on Friday night.
Simon Carruthers has been growing his hair since the birth of his son in August 2010.
It was then he decided he would grow his hair as part of a charity donation.
“I have had a few family members who have passed away with cancer,” he said.
“The most memorable will be my mother and mother-in-law.
“Ever since my son was born, I have been growing my hair with the specific aim of growing it for charity.”
Carruthers’ mom died four days after his son was born.
“There’s not a lot we can do when someone is 80 or 90 and they have cancer.
“For me, it’s ten times as worse when you have got kids with cancer.”
Carruthers said the kids would be teased at school because they had to shave their heads until this programme came to be with other students and teachers joining in.
“Over the years, the charity St Baldrick’s had grown to what it is today,” he added.
In addition to cutting his hair, the self-proclaimed wine geek has also arranged a tasting menu at Mad Hatters on Thursday night.
“It’s my forte. I’m probably not the person who's going to run a marathon or do spinning, but something with wine and dinner is more my taste.
“It’s something quite easy for me to organise and the events are quite popular.”
Carruthers continued: “It’s called ‘Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow’ and it’s $120 a head.
“We have got a full course tasting menu and we’ve paired it with some lovely wines.
“I’ll be talking about the wine and where it’s from.”
Carruthers said there will also be raffles and prizes. Proceeds will be going to St Baldrick’s.
To make a reservation for the dinner, call Mad Hatters directly at 297-6231.
The shaving will start on Friday at 4:30pm until about 9pm at BAA.
