The popular yet mysterious team at Bermemes have finally outed themselves two days before their first anniversary.
The social media satirists have gone down a storm on websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with their witty, irreverent and just plain silly take on life in Bermuda.
Announcing the news on their website Bermemes.com, the team is made up of local artist Dejon Simmons, 25, (founder and CEO), Karriem Sharrieff, 28, of Exist Multimedia, (marketing director), Elizabeth Varao, a 24-year-old with a first class Bachelors Degree in Business Management, (business director) is, and Makeem Bartley, 19, a young rapper who goes by the name of Haz (marketing director).
Back in June The Bermuda Sun was given exclusive access to interview the team under the strict instruction that we did not reveal their identity.
Simmons told us that while having a philosophical moment in the shower one day he had the idea to launch a Cup Match related Facebook page. He told us back in June: “It was a week before Cup Match and I was in the shower thinking about life.
“Everybody had started posting things online about their colours and changing their Facebook profiles to red and blue or blue and blue and I thought, I’m going to start a Cup Match page.
“That was the original idea but then I thought, no — I’m going to go bigger. That’s when I started the Bermemes page. The first post about Cup Match had over 1,000 likes.”
The Bermuda Sun also ran a series of exclusive cartoons and memes created by the team.
A message on the Bermemes website today told fans: “AY BUH! Today marks the day that Bermemes was born, and don, I’m so proud of what it has become – you lot dun’een know! What started as just jokes with my boys became something much bigger than expected, and it should be celebrated, not just by the Bermemes team and those exclusively involved, but also by you byes that are reading this.
“To see our culture come alive in more ways than just a holiday is fettinvell wikid buh (translation: absolutely amazing)! Speaking for the team, words can only express so much pride that we have. As we’ve previously repeated numerous times, Bermemes is really because of you, and it will continue because of the community we built together. I won’t lie, it has been hard at times working anonymously, and having a very small budget made me want to throw in the towel at times, but then we would recieve little emails, comments and tweets like: ‘Gotta love Bermemes -good Bermudian humor’ and ‘Bermemes is the only reason I feeling the spirit of Cup Match #Somerset”.
“It’s commentary like those above that really push the team to keep steady, regardless of the hardships. For a year, we’ve worked tirelessly, and without profit, to bring you laughter with events such as the Harlem Shake, Bermeme Valentines, or even more serious involvements that should be made available like the streaming of #BerRights. We do this for you!”
