WEDNESDAY, JULY 6: Trailers loaded with construction materials and a sewage treatment plant rolled off the Oleander this weekend.
The container ship arrived in Hamilton on Sunday from New Jersey.
Among her cargo of 130 containers was a trailer load of rebar or reinforced steel bars for the Waterloo House development on Pitts Bay Road. The sewage treatment plant was taken to the Grand Atlantic development on South Shore, to provide residents with clean water.
Materials
It is easy to think that container ships servicing Bermuda just bring in groceries and supplies.
But all sorts of machinery, construction materials, cars and even horses are ferried across the Atlantic by the Oleander, the Bermuda Islander and the Somers Isles.
Next week the Oleander will be bringing in a gas turbine for Belco.
The Bermuda Islander arrives tomorrow.
Today the Norwegian Gem and Celebrity Summit cruise liners dock in the West End, until Friday.
Explorer of the Seas and Norwegian Dawn will then bring 5,000 tourists into Dockyard at the weekend.
The Explorer of the Seas arrives on Saturday at 11am for the day.
The Norwegian Dawn gets into Dockyard at 11am on Sunday for two days.
The Mirabella V sloop — the largest single-masted yacht in the world — was in the Great Sound over the weekend, after sailing into St. George’s on June 25 from the Caribbean. The 246 ft vessel is expected to head to Newport on Rhode Island later this week.
