Thomson wins time trial
Weather conditions were good with any threat of rain a long way off as the riders set off at one minute intervals on a course, which took the older, more experienced riders west on Middle road from Lindo's in Warwick to Dockyard and back, a distance of approx 23 miles, with younger riders covering two shorter routes.
The youngest group - aged 10 and under - followed at a safe distance by a parent, turned at the MarketPlace and the 11 to 14-year-olds raced to Jennings Bay Road and back to Lindo's.
The road to Dockyard is a tough and undulating ride, with some challenging climbs, notably Scaur hill in Somerset, coupled with some rough and uneven road surfaces along the way.
All the younger riders had finished when word came through that there had been a car accident blocking the road just west of the Spicelands riding school. Fingers were crossed that no one was hurt, but there were concerns that the likely hold up might require that the senior race be abandoned.
However, thanks to excellent work from the Bermuda Police Service, who were swiftly at the scene, all the riders were shepherded through without anyone being held up for too long.
The fastest and overall winner was Garth Thomson in a stunning time of 50 mins 23 secs, with second fastest Wayne Scott almost four minutes adrift but still put in an excellent ride. Julia Hawley was the fastest lady rider finishing just over the hour. Molly Pilgrim was victorious in the 11 to 14 age group in 33 minutes and 34 seconds and Justin Ferreira was fastest of the 10 and unders in 12 minutes 25 seconds.
The Bermuda Bicycle Association's next time trial is on Sunday June 10th when the National Championships are to be held at Southside.[[In-content Ad]]
