The chief engineer on board the Kasif KalKavan suffered a deep cut to his face as the vessel was travelling across the Atlantic Ocean between Georgia in the U.S. and Turkey.
The injury occurred at about 4:30pm on Saturday, when a grinder tool on the ship malfunctioned and a piece of the machinery flew off, hitting the sailor in the face. The Bermuda Maritime Operations centre was contacted and the 10,000 tonne vessel was diverted towards Bermuda.
At about 9pm the surgeon was taken out to the ship, anchored just off Five Fathom Hole, on a pilot boat.
Doctor
After assessing the injury the doctor was able to stitch up the sailor.
An hour later the doctor returned to St. George’s, while the Kasif KalKavan continued on her way to Turkey.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, the Oleander continues to undergo a major re-fit. She is currently in dry dock in Holland, where work is being done to strengthen her bow.
Her replacement, the Hohesand, was delayed this week by the snowstorms that have been pummeling the east coast of America.
She arrived in Hamilton on Monday morning.
The only other arrival from the seas scheduled for this week is the Bermuda Islander, which is due to arrive in her usual Thursday morning slot.
