The Bermuda Regiment saw a significant increase in male and female recruits this year as its Warwick Camp gates opened on Sunday.

Of the new 162 recruits, 36 were volunteers and nine of those were female.

Over the next two weeks, they will be challenged both mentally and physically. Rising at 5:30am each morning they will be subjected to rigorous training sessions. Drill, weapon and field craft lessons start at 8am and last until 10pm before lights out at 11pm.

Bermudian recruits from all walks of life will be encouraged to get along and accomplish common goals. After being allocated to sections and platoons, the newcomers were given various instructions before heading to the 100-metre beach range for a firepower demonstration.

Over the next two weeks, the recruits will be visited by various officials and community figures, who will observe their training.

On Monday, the troops were visited by Premier Paula Cox and David Burch, Minister of National Security, along with other senior government figures.
