WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10: Reigning Miss Teen Bermuda Shaunte Simons says she would like to use her new position to effect positive change on Bermuda’s moral landscape.
The 17-year-old Saltus Grammar School graduate was talking after winning the pageant at the Fairmont Southampton Resort on Sunday evening.
She beat eight other contestants to the top prize and also picked up the prize of Miss Sweet Charity.
She told the Bermuda Sun: “I would hope to influence on the lack of moral responsibility that I see in a lot of young people today and I would hope to be a positive role model — somebody they could look up to and listen to my story. I’d like to change a few minds and even if I can just help one person it would mean a lot to me.“
Representing Devonshire, Ms Simons said she has always had a charitable streak — something that she picked up from her parents who are both active in the community.
“I have always been involved in charity I am a strong advocate to give back to the community. During the years, people have given to me so it’s important that I give back to others.
“I get it from my family — my dad teaches Kung Fu and he loves to work with young people so I have a strong male role model and my mother loves to give back to the community and work with young females as well.
“It’s something I have always been used to and feel at home doing.”
The new Miss Teen Bermuda aspires to be a judge when she is older, an aspiration she has had since she was just five years old. Eventually she would like to open her own law firm in Bermuda.
She will go onto compete in the Talented Teens Haynes Smith Digicel Pageant in St Kitt’s in December.
