How to fly through airport security

If you’re travelling over the Christmas and New Year holidays, you can plan to make it less stressful getting through security checkpoints at airports.
Airports will be busier and are more likely to have a higher alert status and travellers don’t always think things through.
When I was returning from Toronto two weeks ago, the guy in front of me tried to bring three carry-ons — one of which was filled with tools.
After having an animated discussion with the security agent, he had to go check the suitcase full of tools.
In the meantime he held up the line for the rest of us.
Leaving Bermuda recently, there was a woman who had lots of metal necklaces on, which set off the alarm.
Think what you are wearing and remember that you have to take off all those items which won’t get past the security buzzer.
You obviously don’t want to wear a pair of boots that lace up the leg if you’re going to have to take them off and put them back on again.
Free Wi-Fi
Delta Airlines is offering free Wi-Fi Internet service on all its flights from now until January 2 as a Christmas gift to its customers. The service is available through Gogo Inflight Internet, a division of Google.
You should be able to connect for free through your browser and it will redirect you to www.airborne.gogoinflight.com
I’ve used Gogo before on a US Airways flight and it was seamless.
On the US Airways flight it cost $7.95 so you’ll be able to connect in the air and save a few bucks.
Budget deal
I forgot to rent a car before I left for Canada two weeks ago. I realized this as I landed at Toronto’s Pearson Airport. No reservation, no problem. While standing at the carousel waiting for my bag to come out, I went to www.budget.ca/westjet on my wireless device to make one.
By the time my luggage finally arrived I had booked myself a PT Cruiser. I picked up my bag and went to Budget to get my car.
It was hassle free, plus I was able to show the clerk at the counter my iPod with the reservation on it.
It was very quick and easy.
If you’re smarter than me and book ahead of time, you can save up to 30 per cent by using the link above and the promo code BCD # A376105.
Hertz
The rental car company is offering 20 per cent off its rates in ski areas through April 30, 2011. The offer applies many to SUVs so you can lug your ski equipment around.
You’ll also earn one American Airlines
AAdvantage mile per dollar spent.
Go to Hertz.com and look under Special Offers in the left hand navigation bar.
Track your miles
If you use multiple airlines, based on who has the cheapest rate and need help in managing your miles, one of the best places to go is awardwallet.com. It will help you keep track of all your mileage programmes.
The website will let you know when your balances change and before your points expire.
Even if you only fly twice a year, it’s not that difficult to earn a free ticket every other year if you manage your miles properly.
If you decide to do sign up, you should have all your frequent flier numbers and PINS before you log in. that will save you some extra headaches in trying to add programmes to your Skywallet and not being able to do so because your PIN isn’t handy.  n
