Flora Duffy has been selected to an all-star cycling team which will ride in the Nature Valley Grand Prix.
She was one of six collegiate women picked to ride for the Fiber One Collegiate Women’s All-Stars team.
The women were chosen based on their performance at the collegiate national championships last month.
Duffy said: “This is great. I was really excited to be selected. Going into Collegiate Nationals it was a goal of mine, but I didn't know if I could achieve it because I didn't know what level my riding was at.”
She said the selection was “really surprising. I knew I had been riding well in training....but you never really know how you are doing until you go out there and race. So to produce some of the results I have is really exciting for me.”
The triathlete has been attending the University of Colorado-Boulder and went out for the cycling team as a way to keep her fitness level up.
She said her success in the sport hasn’t made her give up triathlon.
“It has not changed my opinion but it has definitely made me think about concentrating on cycling. It is a possibility for the future, perhaps. I don't know. Right now I am really enjoying it and just seeing how it goes.”
Duffy added what she’s most looking forward to being a part of the Fiber One team is riding with my new team mates; working together with them and, of course, riding alongside all the top pro's in the U.S. I have never done a big stage race so enjoying the atmosphere that goes along with a big race like this.”
Besides Duffy, the other five were Jennifer Purcell, Midwestern State University; Elle Anderson, Dartmouth College; Rita Klofta, DePauw University; Leia Tyrrell, Oregon State University; and Kimberley Turner, Seattle Pacific University.
Team members receive free entry into the Nature Valley Grand Prix plus host housing, a support staff, an operating budget, clothing and a travel stipend. n
