Do you believe whites are superior?

... black Bermudians who moan about the past do — and that’s why they’ll never overcome white racism. Those of us who’ve moved on believe we’re all equal

Psssst!..Make sure nobody sees you reading this secret stuff.

'Black' Bermudians who moan about the past and its legacy actually believe that 'whites' really are superior.

They really do! All you have to do is listen to what they actually say. However, I don't share their belief.

I believe that I - as well as all other black Bermudians - am essentially equal to all other people. I do recognize that I have skills and abilities that others do not share - to the same extent. That doesn't make me superior or inferior to anybody. Neither does it make other people superior or inferior to me.

Can you write the way I write? Can I play music the way Shine Hayward plays, or sail better than Peter Bromby? No, I cannot. Does any of that make me inferior to either of them or superior to you? No, it does not.

It simply makes us different.

Listen and read carefully to what 'black moaners' say and write. Dr Eva Hodgson has stated - and stated repeatedly - words to the effect that: "Blacks cannot be racist because only people who have power can be racist; and blacks have no power."

Taken further, this means that 'blacks' cannot ever overcome white racism. Ultimately, this 'black moaner' belief holds that white racism will always negatively affect blacks; and that blacks cannot ever escape white racism and its effects unless whites graciously relent and graciously allow blacks to come out from under the blanket of their white racism.

It's clear, then, that 'black moaners' believe - and believe totally - in eternal white dominance and supremacy.

'Sistahs' with self-belief

I don't share that view. Neither does that Barack guy. Nor does ex-Prisoner 46664, or that golfing guy Tiger something, or those tennis playing sisters; nor do all those national leaders throughout the Caribbean.

There's a host of black Bermudian 'sistahs' who don't believe it either. These 'sistahs' do believe in themselves. These 'sistahs' also went one step further and thus moved on. These black Bermudian 'sistahs' studied, got educated, trained themselves or got trained, set themselves the task of getting ahead and - like Tiger and Serena and Venus - they've moved on in the game that they chose to play, on the playing field - level or slightly un-level - on which they happened to land.

These 'sistahs' didn't sit and moan. They got off their page 46. They moved on.

Responding to last week's column, and referring, as I had, to black males, Dr Hodgson asked"... if it is their gombey culture that has made them so dysfunctional?"

Yes. Yes. Yes.

In 1990, no one had heard of two little inner-city black girls who spent much of their time swatting tennis balls. Now their names are on everybody's lips. These two little girls trained and disciplined themselves until they could - and did - beat ALL the competition. These sisters didn't moan. Instead, they prepared themselves so that they could move on. And move on they have!

Prisoner 46664 didn't sit in his cell and moan. Under horrible conditions, he kept his head, collaborated and schemed. Twenty-seven years after being locked-up, Prisoner 46664 walked out of prison and later walked into the Presidential residence as President!

He wasn't a moaner. Like so many of us, he was a mover. Ex-prisoner 46664 doesn't forget the past; but he says: "Happiness demands giving up all hope of a better past."

As plainly as I can put it get off the moan and get on the move!

If you need inspiration - even daily inspiration - go to Court Street. Stand on the Western sidewalk halfway between Church and Reid Streets. Look East. Look up. You'll see, high up on Alexandrina Hall, the figures 1852.

That building and that number was put there by black men who - just eighteen years before - had been chattel slaves defined as less than human. That building was thrust into the sky by movers. Not moaners.

Stand on the Southwest corner of the junction of Par-la-Ville and Church Streets. Look Northeast. See the name Maxwell R Roberts on that seven story building. That's the name of a contemporary black mover. Not a moaner.

So there. I've outed the moaner's secret. I suppose now that some of my black brethren will seek to nail me to their black cross. But first they'll have to catch me; 'cause like Barack, Tiger, Serena, and 46664, I'm still moving on!

[PS - Just a thought... was the 'Big Con' really arranged in order to stroke the egos of people who - in 2008 - just love to hear 'black moaners' asking white people for an absolution that whites cannot give?][[In-content Ad]]
