The Bermuda flag was flying high today at Jobson’s Cove as Facebook group BerMemes pulled off the first ever Harlem Shake on the island.
The anonymous group organized the shoot which featured locals sporting their craziest outfits and props to stage a version of a dance which has become the latest Internet craze.
There were snorkellers, giant inflatable Gosling’s bottles, Bermuda flags and a man dressed from head to toe in a lime green leotard, to name a few.
The 30 second videos that have been cropping up over the Internet from countries around the world features an excerpt from the song Harlem Shake by Baauer. The films start with one person dancing – often wearing a helmet or mask - as others stand around taking no notice. Then as the bass drops, everyone launches into a crazy dance that is very loosely based on the original Harlem Shake.
A spokeswoman from the BerMemes group told the Bermuda Sun: “With all the Harlem Shake videos coming out from different countries – there’s one from Canada, there’s one from Trinidad, there are videos from all over the US - I thought Bermuda should have one too so here we are.”
The official video will be out by the middle of next week. To see the video go to Bermemes Facebook page, on Youtube and via Twitter.
The spokeswoman added: “If you have not ‘liked’ BerMemes on Facebook or on Twitter then they should join us now.”
This is the first video the group has filmed – it released a spoof animation during the election ridiculing the PLP’s puppet advertisement.
The spokeswoman said there will be many more to come. “We will be doing a lot more things and we have our huge launch party in May and following that there is going to be a lot more to follow. BerMemes is going to take Bermuda by a storm.”
