InMotion School of Dance will hold its 17th annual showcase next month with a tribute to the arts, dance, science and modern culture.
The showcase will feature more than 700 dancers and 40 different dances.
It is entitled The Award Goes To… and will be held from May 10 to 12 and May 15 to 18 at City Hall.
Founder Lizz Pimentel said: “We’re holding our very own award show with dance tributes to the arts, dance, science, sports, modern culture and more.
“Through dance, we’re celebrating the best and brightest be they Nobel Peace Prize winners, Oscar Award winning actors, even World cup Champions and pop icons.”
Asked what will make this show different than previous years, she said: “Every year we strive to improve upon our previous efforts and this year is no different.
“We have seen a renewed commitment from our dancers this year that has translated to some of the best performances we have seen.
“Our choreographers have taken this opportunity to challenge the dancers with more challenging and dynamic choreography and the result is some of the most exciting pieces we have put on stage.”
She continued: “We have always been ahead of the pack when it comes to staging our shows and this year is no different.
“Whether it be the multiple hand-painted backdrops, the hand-made props created by local artist Michael Mello or the dynamic changes between pieces, everything involved in the show is done to give the local audiences more than they expect.
“Our backstage crew has been together for a few years now and we can see that familiarity translating into better lighting design, quicker changes, and a more clean and polished show.”
Pimentel said the show will see more than 700 individual dancers and 40 different dances.
Dances include ballet, tap, modern, jazz, pre-ballet, parents and tots and more. One of the most exciting parts of this year’s show is the music.
“Our choreographers have selected some of the latest and greatest hits as well as some great classic tracks.”
Asked why she continues to hold the show year after year, Pimentel said: “Our annual showcase is exciting for us because it represents the culmination of more than just one year’s hard work.
“The show is a landmark to the school and to the students and means many different things to different people. For some students it is their first time on stage and their joy and excitement about performing for their family is infectious.
“For many students it is their last show before they head to school and it represents hours of hard work and dedication and friendship. For our teachers it is a way to see that they have made a difference to the dancers and have been able to give of themselves in a meaningful way.”
She continued: “For me I find great joy knowing that something that I created out of love has affected so many people.
“I still feel the same way about this showcase as I did just before the first one — nervous, excited, and thankful for the support and dedication of so many people.
“I feel truly blessed to have this opportunity to share such an exciting moment with so many wonderful people.”
Asked why the public should attend the event, Pimentel said: “This show is a labour of love for so many students and it shines through during the performance.
“In Motion always strives to create a memorable performance and so far we haven’t disappointed.
“Audiences will walk away excited the youth of Bermuda are capable of presenting a performance that will be memorable past its closing days.
“We hope that the community will support these students as they put their best foot forward and show what they have learned. We know they won’t be disappointed.”
The show will be held on May 10 at 7pm and 2pm and 7pm on May 11 to 12. From May 15 to 18, the show will be at 7pm. Tickets are $39 for adults and $29 for children. They are available at www.inmotion.bm and www.premiertickets.bm.
