If dancing, singing and acting are things that excite you and you are between the ages of 14 and 18, Bermuda Glee may just be what you are looking for.
Troika Bermuda has taken over the popular summer programme and auditions are next weekend.
They will be held on April 19 at 10am to 11:30am or 12pm to 1:30pm at the Berkeley Institute.
They are open to any resident of Bermuda between the ages of 14 and 18 as of June 29, who is interested in performing, working with lights, sound, costumes or props during the week-long intensive programme.
No previous experience is necessary for participants.
Shoa Bean of Troika said this year the auditions will be held in workshop-style auditions where participants will audition in groups.
They will also participate in vocal, dance and acting exercises as part of the process.
The audition blocks are 90 minutes and participants are expected to stay for the whole time.
Bean spoke about Troika taking over Bermuda Glee.
“Troika has been asked to take over the reins of Glee. It’s a programme that merges the private schools with the public schools with one common interest, which is the arts.
“It’s an intensive not a camp. They will all work together and produce a show at the end of the week.”
Bean explained the new audition format.
“Traditionally, there were individual auditions but this year, we’re looking to do a different format.
“It’s basically workshop style auditions. We will get to see how the students work together from the start.
“We get to see how they work together as a group. We want to see the individual talent but how they work together on the stage.”
As far as how many students will be accepted, Bean said there is no cap as the programme has “open arms”.
“We are open to as many young people as we can get. We just want to break all the barriers between the private and public schools.
“We don’t have a specific number that we’re looking for but we want as many young people to come out as possible.”
Bean also said if you aren’t a singer or dancer, you can help with the sound, backstage or with costumes.
“Troika is very excited about the opportunity. When we were first approached, we were like ‘us, really?’, but we know what Glee does is similar to what we do.
“It was definitely a good fit.”
Marcus Smith has participated in Glee for the past two years and said it provides a way for public and private school kids to get to know one another.
“With Glee, you just feel like you’ve made a huge group of friends and you have made a production you can call your own.
“It’s more like we have come together and developed it instead of it being instructed to us.
“It feels more personal. It’s like you’re proud of it.”
He continued: “Glee isn’t about being the best, it’s about going out and having a great time.
“I have made friends for life that I wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t done Glee.”
Bermuda Glee is sponsored by the Argo Foundation.
Registration will be held one hour before the audition period and the fee is $10. The cost of Bermuda Glee from July 1 to 7 is $40.
