Poll: PLP in closer touch with people's concerns

By almost a two-to-one margin, when asked which party do you believe is in touch with the concerns of most Bermudians, voters cited the PLP (48.4% versus 25.4% for the OBA) in a recent poll by Profiles of Bermuda.

Nearly 1 in 5 voters (18.2%), felt that neither party were in touch with their concerns while1 in 10 (8%) were unsure.

Concerns by Race

By race, there were stark differences. While 69.1% of Black voters felt that the PLP were more in touch with the concerns of Bermudians, 56.2% of Whites felt that the OBA were in touch with peoples’ concerns. In addition, 1 in 10 Whites (10.1%) felt that the PLP were in touch with the concerns of the people, while a similar amount of Blacks (9.3%) felt that theOBA were more in touch with Bermudians’ concerns.

Concerns by Income

By income, more than half of those households earning between $50,000 and $100,000 (56.6%), as well as those earning under $50,000 (54.5%), were more inclined to feel that the PLP were more in touch with their concerns. In addition, nearly 4 in 10 (39.5%) of those earning more than $100,000 stated the PLP were more in touch with their concerns, while one-third of this group (32.3%) stated the OBA. However, of all households who felt that the OBA were more in touch with their concerns, two-thirds of them (65.6%) had in-comes in excess of $100,000. For the PLP the figure was 45.6%.

There were no significant differences by age and gender.

The survey was conducted among 375 registered voters between 20MAR14 and 18MAY14 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5%. Some 69% of respondents were obtained by landlines, 24% by cell phones and 7% via the Internet. By race, 62% of respondents were Black while 31% were White. (In the voting population, 63% are Black and 24% are White). Data for all demographics were weighted to reflect the 2010 Census. More survey results will be released later.
