‘Corrections Week’ a first for Bermuda

Corrections officers, both current and retired, will be recognized for their commitment to their efforts as “Corrections Week” starts on June 29 — the first in the Department’s history.

Assistant Commissioner of Corrections Kenneth Cann describes the purpose of the observance, which lasts through July 5.

“Corrections Week has been designed to celebrate all staff which doesn’t only include officers but everyone who helps successfully run the Department, such as psychologists, nurses, vocational officers and other service providers.

Working together 

“There is more to the Department of Corrections than just the Corrections officers and we all work together to do what we can to have inmates return into the community as productive citizens.”

Mr. Cann added that the over 200 employees who work with the Department take pride in the role they play in keeping Bermuda safe and they deserve to be recognized for their hard work.

Corrections Week 2014 will feature a number of events, kicking off with a church service on Sunday at the Heritage Worship Centre at 11am. 

Inmates’ art

A proclamation will be read at the City Hall at noon on Monday. Inmates’ art will also be on display on the lawn at City Hall from 10 a.m. 

An inmate church service will be held at the Prison Farm Facility on the evening of July 1, while officers can vie for a trophy, bragging rights and prizes at the DOC Golf Tournament to be held at Port Royal on July 2.

Corrections Week 2014 will cap off with a Fun Day Barbeque at Clearwater Beach on July 4 and its Appreciation and Awards Reception to be held at the Bermuda College on Saturday, July 5.
