United Airlines cuts winter schedule

United Airlines has cut its winter schedule to Bermuda due to lack of demand.

The move to suspend its service from Newark from December 3 to April 2, 2015 will be seen as a blow to the island’s tourism industry. 

But Tourism Development Minister Shawn Crockwell told the Sun that he was hopeful other airlines could make up for the shortfall created by United’s decision.

A spokesperson for United Airlines told the Sun: “United will suspend its Bermuda-New York/Newark service during the period December 3 through April 2, 2015 inclusive, in response to a seasonal reduction in market demand on the route next winter.

“The daily service will resume effective April 3, 2015.

“This action is consistent with the company’s previously-announced capacity guidance.

“We will contact customers with bookings for affected flights to either offer them alternative travel plans or provide refunds. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

Last winter United Airlines reduced its year-round daily service between Bermuda and New York to a four-times-a-week service from December and February.

A first

It is believed that this is the first time that the airline has completely cut its winter schedule to Bermuda.

However, next year’s summer schedule will not be reduced and will remain as it was this year.

Mr Crockwell said: “Fortunately, we continue to have the commitment of other longstanding carriers out of the New York area during the winter — American, Delta and JetBlue.

“Delta, for example, has confirmed that it will continue its JFK service year round and that starting in November, they will revert to a morning departure out of New York and an afternoon return.

“This schedule replaces the existing evening/early morning departure times, making it more convenient for leisure travellers.”

He added: “We’ll work closely with these valued airline partners to help ensure their continued success and that we have the necessary airlift to meet the demands of our international business and leisure sectors during the winter.”
