Teaching requires a highly complex set of skills and abilities. In our fast-paced, technological society, many brand new teachers are faced with an arduous task in the classroom.  Recognizing this, in the late 1980's the Ministry of Education, and the Bermuda Union of Teachers (BUT), in consultation with the Association of School Principals (ASP) established Bermuda's first mentor-teacher program known as BTIP—Bermuda Teacher Induction Program.

Minister of Education and Economic Development, Dr The Hon. Grant Gibbons, JP, MP was present at the ceremony held on Tuesday to award new teachers in BTIP mentor programme. The program was designed for mentors to assist new teachers as they meet the challenges of the contemporary classroom. This year, 11 teachers were recognized for having successfully completed the two-year mentoring programme or induction programme.

The BTIP mentors provide support, assistance, recognition, guidance and coaching for the overall personal and professional development of the inductee teacher. At the culmination of the inductees’ first two years of educational service they are formally recognized during the end of year induction ceremony.
