Top Bermudian cyclist Dominique Mayho hopes to finish with the fastest time among all Caribbean competitors  in the road race at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 20-year-old will be going wheel-to-wheel with some of the biggest names in cycling, including the likes of recently knighted Tour-de-France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins.

However, Mayho hopes to block out the distractions and focus on outperforming his peers from the Caribbean.

“My goal is to finish the race and try to be the top finisher from the Caribbean,” Mayho told the Bermuda Sun.

“I know that I’m not going to be able to keep up with the top guys, but I can see myself being the fastest from the
Caribbean. Achieving that would mean a lot to me and give me confidence going into future races.”

Mayho, who forms one half of a two-strong Bermuda cycling team at the Games with Nicole Mitchell, has been training hard with Olympic medallist Brian Walton, of Canada, in preparation for the event, and is ready to take that training to the Commonwealth stage.

“It’s been a lot of training for me. I’ve been riding 15-20 hours every week.”

He added: “Going to the Commonwealth Games is unbelievable, really. A couple of years ago I would have never thought this could happen. I’m very proud to be able to compete for Bermuda, it means a lot.”

The budding cycling star will also fly Bermuda’s flag at the Caribbean Championships in October, followed by the CAC games in November to finish the year.

The Commonwealth Games time-trial race will be held on July 31, with the road race on August 3.

The race will feature 12 laps through a 14km circuit through the city, totalling 168km. n
