Wells and Town denied

Nahki Wells laid on Huddersfield Town’s equalizer against Bournemouth last night but couldn’t emulate his match-winning debut in a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth in the Championship.

Wells was drafted back into the starting XI after being cup-tied for the FA Cup defeat to Charlton at the weekend and he was a lively presence up front alongside Danny Ward.

However, the 23-year-old Bermudian couldn’t find the net in his third appearance for his new club and failed to add to his goals against Millwall and QPR.

It was not for the lack of effort, though, as Wells began well and threatened a number of times in the first half.

The second period saw the Cherries go one up in the 55th minute thanks to a penalty from Lewis Grabban but four minutes later Wells was instrumental in Town’s leveller

Calum Woods played a neat one-two with the club-record signing before smashing the ball home.

Bournemouth ultimately, though, proved the more clinical side and substitute Tokelo Rantie ran on to a through-ball to finish past keeper Alex Smithies 18 minutes from the whistle.

There was still time for Wells to force Lee Camp into a number of saves but it ended 2-1 and Town made the long journey home empty-handed.

Town boss Mark Robins praised the front man but admitted the Terriers paid the price for not taking their chances.

He said: “We created a few good chances, but we were bare up top at times because Nahki was on his own. 

“He fought on his own well and did excellently in the goal to set up Calum Woods, who took it brilliantly. 

“We had other opportunities, but again we spurned them, which is becoming a bit like a broken record.”

He added: “The result is disappointing; we need to start picking up points away from home.

“I thought we were worthy of a point tonight, not the three. 

“We were up against a good footballing side who were on their game; we just couldn’t get a foothold.”
