Nahki Wells gave Huddersfield Town an instant return on their club-record transfer fee with a classy late winner on his debut against Millwall at the John Smith’s Stadium today.

Bermudian Wells, 23, came off the bench with just over half an hour remaining to strike in the 90th minute and seal a 1-0 win against a Lions side that had Ian Holloway in charge for the first time.

The island’s first million-point footballer on Friday completed his switch - though to be worth around £1.5m plus add-ons - from neighbours Bradford City. It was a move that rankled with many City fans, while others questioned Wells’ choice given the reported interest from Premier League clubs.

Huddersfield manager Mark Robins after that match called those doubters ‘ignorant’ and was full of praise for the man he hopes will fire Huddersfield further up the table from their current 12th place in the Championship.

Robins told the club website: “He provided the moment of the game and finished the chance superbly - it was a real goal scorer’s finisher.

“We are delighted to have him and I am looking forward to working with him. People used to say that I didn’t do anything apart from score goals and if he does that for me, I will be delighted.

“He is only 23 and I believe that we can enhance his potential and make him worth more than his current value. We aren’t getting carried away and we will see how it develops.”
