Film’s biggest night — the Academy Awards — airs on Sunday and boy, am I excited! Ellen DeGeneres is hosting so I’m expecting plenty of laughs.

Over the past few months, my partner and I have watched most of the films that have been nominated and are hoping our favourites take home Oscars.

For those of you who have been living under a rock, the biggest movies for this season and competitors for Best Picture are: 12 Year a Slave, Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle, Gravity, Dallas Buyers Club, Captain Philips,  August: Osage County, Her, Nebraska and Philomena.

12 Years a Slave is definitely my favourite, followed by American Hustle.

If you haven’t seen any of these films, I urge you to watch at least 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle and also Gravity — solely because of the amazing technology used to film it.

12 Years A Slave is the favourite to win Best Picture and hopefully it’s director, Steve McQueen, will win Best Director. Not only is it deserving but it would be the first Best Director win for a black man.

The film’s star Chiwitel Ejiofor is nominated for Best Actor but he’s only won one award so far, the BAFTA for best actor, so it’s looking like he won’t win, unfortunately.

Matthew McConaughey looks like he might be the favourite to win for his role in Dallas Buyers Club or maybe even Leonardo DiCaprio for Wolf of Wall Street.

In the Best Actress category, I think Cate Blanchett has it locked down since she’s won all the awards for her role in Blue Jasmine.

The Best Supporting Actress category is another tricky one. Jennifer Lawrence has won a few awards for her supporting role in American Hustle and so has my girl crush, Lupita Nyong’o for her role in 12 Years a Slave.

I think if Jennifer wins, there will be some backlash because she won Best Actress last year and many critics claim she “overacted” in the role as Roslyn in American Hustle.

Best Supporting Actor will likely go to Jared Leto who has been cleaning up all awards season for his role as a transsexual man in Dallas Buyers Club. It would be awesome if Michael Fassbender won for his slave master role in 12 Years a Slave but he’s barely campaigned so I doubt he will get it.

But as we all know, the Oscars are highly unpredictable and you never really know who’s going to win. We don’t have long to wait to find out!
