The business end of the karting season goes full throttle from Sunday — with four Trophy Day Series race days and four Championship Series race days remaining.

And there’s an extra buzz among the karting community after it was confirmed street racing would return to Hamilton on May 31-June 1.

Sunday sees the latest instalment of the Trophy Day series at the Southside circuit, with a clutch of races up for grabs in the TAG, Shifter 125 and junior classes.

An added incentive to drivers is that the Bermuda Karting Club has imposed an entry requirement for the season finale Hamilton Grand Prix, whereby racers must complete six races (nine for novice drivers) in order to be eligible to take to the starting grid on Front Street.

Scott ‘Skitchy’ Barnes, who is leading the way in both TAG and Shifter Class in the Championsip series is in Texas this weekend competing in the Texas Lone Star Grand Prix street race.

Club vice president John Correiro Jr told the Bermuda Sun: “Skitchy is kicking a** right now — it’s kind of frustrating! He’s got a good programme going, that’s all.

“But this is the time when the racing gets serious, we have four race days left [in each series].”

This weekend’s Trophy Day is sponsored by Sandra Whitehead and Kenneth Harrison and is dubbed ‘The Brooklyn Race Day’.

And while the Trophy Series rewards consistency, the individual nature of these races, says Correiro Jr, mean ‘you are always racing for something’.

“It gives new juniors and seniors alike a chance — even if you are out of the picture in the championsips you can come out and win a first-place trophy.”

The action gets under way at 12pm this Sunday. Rental karts are available for hire for children looking to try out. They are available from 10:30am on a first-come, first-served basis. The club are still looking for sponsorship in order to put on the Hamitlon Grand Prix. Various packages are available for the two-day event.
