Wells and Town slump to defeat

It was a tough day at the office for Nahki Wells on Saturday as a toothless Huddersfield Town went down 2-0 at home to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

The Terriers enjoyed 67 per cent of possession and had 16 attempts at goal but did not deserve anything out of the game.

Bermuda striker Wells had a couple of sightings of goal, one early on, but the Owls had too much energy and claimed the win thanks to goals from Jeremy Helan and Jacques Maghoma.

Wells made way for Martin Paterson with just under 20 minutes left. After a bright start to his Huddersfield career, Wells, 23, has now gone six games without a goal.

His manager Mark Robins lamented Town's lack of cutting edge against Wednesday but urged fans to stick with his young team.

He told the club website: “This isn’t a criticism, it’s a fact; we have a young side. There are one or two of them who are experienced and know better, but there is no excuse for not really creating anything at home.

“We need the supporters to stay with us. I can totally understand their frustration. That’s certainly not the way we try to play, the transition between the middle and the final third was non-existent, and when we did get in it was long-ball. 

“We saw that away from home last week; we were excellent.  We have to try and be better at home and continue in the same way as we have done. What Sheffield Wednesday did was show more urgency and they were better at getting in our faces.” 

He added: “We are looking to try and get the ball in the right areas, but to do that we need the supporters to stick with us to continue that for the confidence of the players. Our match preparation was not to kick the ball in the final third as quickly as possible, we looked to excite the fans and get the fans on their feet but there wasn’t enough of that. 

“It’s tough to take, especially on the back of last week’s performance, but you haven’t seen the best of us today. It’s difficult because we need that belief and keep passing the ball. I’m not changing it because we are normally good. We have to entertain the supporters. 

“At the stage we are at, sometimes you have a performance like today. The next stage is that mental barrier and we will look to bring one or two in to take us to the next level, but that’s how it is at the moment.”

Town are now 14th in the table, one above Wednesday and 10 points off the playoff places.
