Flanagan’s Onions are officially in the thick of the Digicel Premier Division title race — and they’re going nowhere.
That’s the view of coach Micky Ward who firmly believes his team can continue their run of good form and shake up the island’s traditional elite.
Onions lie just three points off leaders Somerset Trojans heading into the weekend, which sees Ward’s team welcome Dandy Town to BAA Field. Next week Onions take on Trojans in another critical encounter.
Ward told the Bermuda Sun: “I think we can and will make a challenge for the title. The next two games are absolutely massive for us in continuing that challenge. If we stay focused and the players enjoy their football, then we’ll see what happens. We’re in the thick of it, and it’s important we enjoy the challenge and enjoy our football. That is the main thing.”
The Hornets are still licking their wounds after Sunday’s home defeat to Trojans and Ward is braced for a response.
But his side’s current strength is in contrast to the latter part of last campaign when they fell away badly and Ward believes that with the players at his disposal, the team can get even better.
He said: “I would expect us to be in and around the top teams with the quality we have in the squad. We have a good mix of experience and youth in the team too, with some players at that age where they should be hitting their peak.
“As long as they are all on island and available for a game, we fear no one, and that has been reflected in some of our results.”
