Celeb watch: Enchanting Lupita is destined for big things

My newest girl crush is Lupita Nyong’o, so I am dedicating this column to all things Lupita.

I raved about her fashion at the Golden Globes earlier this year and I’m sure I will be raving about it once again at the Academy Awards next month.

A year ago, no one knew her name but now she’s everywhere.

In the meantime, the Kenyan beauty is making the rounds to campaign for her Oscar. She’s the favourite to win for her role of Patsey in 12 Years a Slave.

She has been interviewed by NY Magazine, was featured in Vogue Italia, was part of the Hollywood Issue of Vanity Fair and now she’s in the new Glamour magazine issue.

Although she’s all over the place, it’s not annoying. It’s refreshing to me that a black girl is Hollywood’s It Girl. And not just a black girl, but a dark skinned black girl.

It’s widely known that Hollywood prefers light-skinned women.

Lupita has the ability to give fabulous interviews without coming across as pretentious or self-deprecating.

In the Glamour piece, Lupita mainly talks about hair and make-up and her skincare secrets. But in the NY Mag piece, she speaks about the culture shock of living in America.

“I thrive on structure. I find my freedom in structure. It was very hard to adjust to an individualistic and very liberal system. I mean, my upbringing, I would iron my clothes every night.

“I would plan what I wore the night before, and then I would iron it. That’s just the way my mom raised us.

“Then I got to Hampshire, where clothing is sometimes optional and all this kind of thing. I was mortified.”

Lupita makes me smile. She is very aware of who she is and what she wants.

It seems like she is still a bit in transition, but she seems to be making out okay. Perhaps she’s relaxed after spending a few days in Montego Bay for some much needed R&R, based on her Instagram photos.

She’s definitely one to look out for. I hope that she wins the Oscar and has a long career as a result.

Even if she doesn’t win, the whole world is enchanted by her. I predict major endorsement deals for make-up and fashion.
