Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) today praises the organisers of the Bermuda Regional Bridge Tournament for another resounding success. This was the 56th year for the annual event. It was held from January 25 to 31 and attracted 375 overseas visitors over seven days.
This year saw a 15 per cent increase in the number of international visitors attending the tournament, including players from the U.S., U.K., Austria, Germany, Hong Kong, Bahamas, Costa Rica and Canada. They were joined by 158 local players.
Several overseas players brought friends and family with them to enjoy the Island during the course of the tournament. Guests were treated to Bermudian hospitality including a Bermuda night featuring codfish cakes, Johnny bread and Bermuda fish chowder, a visit to a craft market with local vendors and a black tie gala evening and prizegiving.
Katrina Van Pelt, Chairman of the Tournament, said: “We attribute the growth of the tournament to a new programme with better stratifications, gold points and team games. New international players were attracted this year through our website and a new marketing strategy, while we welcomed regulars back, including large groups from New Jersey, Halifax and Toronto. We’d like to thank everyone in Bermuda who was involved in the tournament for making it such a success, particularly The Fairmont Southampton who were our host.”
David Dodwell, Chairman of Bermuda Tourism Authority, says: “The BTA offers our congratulations to the organisers of the Bermuda Regional Bridge Tournament. They should be proud of what this event has grown to become. It is not only a world-class tournament but is also an opportunity for the players to enjoy the beauty and attractions of our Island while they pursue their passion for bridge. This is a wonderful example of the type of event we that fits well with our strategy.”
The next Bermuda Regional Bridge Tournament will be held from January 24 - 30, 2015. For more information go to www.bermudaregional.com.
