Michelle Obama and Lenny Kravitz.  Tom Cruise and Sandra Bullock.

Keanu Reeves, Bridget Fonda and Elle Macpherson.

Each of them has something in common with The Bermuda Sun. All were born in 1964.

Today, we kick off a year-long celebration of our newspaper’s 50-year evolution from typewriter to Twitter.

Over the course of 2014 we’ll go back to day one, hopscotch five decades and then take a peek into the future, too.

Just last week Sun President Lisa Beauchamp blew the dust off a hardcopy of our first-ever edition, published May 16, 1964 (pictured).  The pages were curled at the edges like a well-read paperback, but once she smoothed out the ruins of time, it revealed a magnificent piece of history — just as every newspaper is supposed to. Some of the advertisers on the inside — Crissons, Argus, BELCO, to name a few — are amazingly still among our valued clients today.

They’ve witnessed, like all of you, our transition from new kid on the block to trusted ally — always looking out for the country’s best interest, jealously searching for fairness.  They’ve seen us fulfil our journalistic mantra of going beyond the headlines and our heartfelt promise to be a friend to the community. The same family that owned The Bermuda Sun in 1964 owns it today. We believe that matters. We believe it’s why we’re still here.

So this year these are the things we will celebrate in the newspaper, online and via social media. We ask that you join us along the way because one thing is for certain: we wouldn’t have made it to 50 without you.
