Several Butterfield Bank customers received a phishing notice on Tuesday from fraudsters.
The e-mail said: Dear Customer: Due to added security measures on our banking and transaction servers, your account has been disabled and auto selected for verification. Your attention is required to reactivate your bank account immediately.” It then provided a link for people to “reactivate’ it.
A Butterfield spokesperson said the Bank will never send customers an e-mail requesting online banking credentials or passwords.
“When recipients click on the embedded links/attachments, they are usually taken to a website where they will be asked to enter their online banking credentials.
Whilst the destination website, and originating e-mail address and signatories may appear to be genuine (possibly bearing the Bank’s logo and the names and phone numbers of real Bank employees), they are fraudulent. Such e-mails are designed by criminals to capture your online banking credentials and steal your money.”
