Duffy in superb win Down Under
Flora Duffy followed up her XTERRA West Championship win with a superb victory in the inaugural Asia-Pacific Championship on Saturday.
The Bermudian triathlete is reaping the rewards from a three-month training stint in South Africa and the win in Jervis Bay, New South Wales, Australia was arguably her best of the season.
Duffy was well ahead of XTERRA World Champ Nicky Samuels and was the first woman out of the water. More impressively, overall she was second overall out of the swim and ninth across the finish line.
“It all came together,” Duffy told TriZone. “I felt great coming into T2 after a really tough bike course and just hammered the first 2K of the run. I just focused on my turnover because I knew Nicky is a strong runner and I wasn’t sure how far behind she was.”
She added: “This area is gorgeous. Growing up in Bermuda I’m kind of a beach snob, so it takes a lot for a beach to impress me and I can tell you it’s gorgeous here, that white sand and water is beautiful. I really enjoyed the swim and seeing Kangaroos, it definitely felt like Australia.”
Duffy’s boyfriend Dan Hugo won the men’s event in what he described as a breakthrough and the ‘first of this stature’.
