Huddersfield Town boss Mark Robins said Nahki Wells was ‘outstanding’ again as the Terriers ended a 10-match winless streak at Yeovil on Monday.
Wells notched his fifth goal in nine games in a 2-1 victory that not only banished any unwanted talk of a late skirmish with the drop zone but also left the Glovers needing a miracle in their final two games to avoid League One football next season.
Yeovil started the game with more urgency — unsurprising given their desperate situation at the foot of the table — and it took Town time to settle at Huish Park.
But the visitors were more dangerous after the break and got their reward when Bermuda striker Wells, 23, turned in Adam Hammill’s cross to open the scoring on 69 minutes.
Just four minutes later, though, Tom Lawrence powered a free-kick home to level things up and frustrate the 494 away fans, who had made the long journey south.
Huddersfield’s Danny Ward then required lengthy treatment before gingerly leaving the field and the subsequent eight minutes of injury time proved crucial.
With seven minutes of added time played, the heavily-bearded Adam Clayton popped up to score a dramatic winner to finally give Town and Wells that winning feeling once again.
“We should have put the game to bed earlier than we did, because we had some great chances,” said Robins after the game.
“Hoggy (Jonathan Hogg) missed a couple for us in good positions. We have Nahki to thank for scoring another goal — he’s been outstanding and will continue to be.
“I’m grateful, because we desperately needed the three points today. I’m relieved it hasn’t gone to the final game of the season like last year. It was massive because we haven’t won since 1 March; it’s been too long in coming.
“It’s still disappointing that we are talking about securing Championship status because we shouldn’t be. This has to be a lesson; we’ve had two seasons in the Championship now.”
The Terriers are 17th in the Championship table, with games against Leicester (h) and Watford (a) remaining.
