And then there were three. Only the most ardent Arsenal fan will still believe their team has a genuine chance of winning the Premier League title.
So that leaves Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea remaining — and, without needing to revert to hyperbole, it really could go either way.
Liverpool are the in-form team, City have the strength in depth, while Chelsea — despite recent stumbles — have Jose Mourinho’s winning mentality.
So who’s your tip? With the title destiny so clouded in mystery, now is the time for you armchair pundits to stick your neck out and say who you think will win.
Here’s my two-pennies’ worth. Chelsea will pay the price, if they haven’t done already, for a lack of a top-drawer striker. Samuel Eto’o is class and has carried the front line but he is in the Indian summer of his career. Demba Ba is not quite at the required level and Fernando Torres, for whatever reason, looks unable to recapture his best form. So the Blues will finish third.
Liverpool have momentum but do they have the know-how to capitalize. They have the best striking duo in the league by a mile and Brendan Rodgers must be in line — along with Tony Pulis if he can keep Palace up — for manager of the year. To be fair, the Reds have not shown any nerves or naivety so far and their leaky backline is not as big an issue as many are making out, especially with the firepower up front.
But to ask a team to go from seventh last year to champions is a huge ask and while it would be thrilling to witness given their style of play, getting over the line may be a game or two beyond them. Reds to finish second.
That, of course, leaves Man City as my pick as champions. Admittedly, I haven’t reinvented the wheel here but with games in hand, Sergio Aguero to come back from injury and the winning nous from the likes of Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure, they are the best equipped to do so.
City’s and Chelsea’s trips to Anfield are rightly seen as pivotal and one can’t help think that if anyone is going to win the league single-handedly over the run-in, it’s going to be Luis Suarez.
But City were my pick at the start of the season — and I’m sticking with them.
All 11pm unless stated
TOMORROW
Man City v Southampton
8:45am
Saints will not be overawed by the trip to the Etihad but they’ll find City a tougher nut to crack than the dismal Newcastle they brushed aside at St Mary’s. City, though, have lost just one at home all season and, with no cup distractions, should be fully focused.
Prediction: 2-1
Aston Villa v Fulham
Fulham did not play like relegation fodder against Everton but on paper that is what they have become. Luckily for them, Aston Villa have an only marginally worse home record than them, which should even things up a little.
Prediction: 1-1
Cardiff v Crystal Palace
Crucial games at the foot of the table are coming thick and fast at the moment and this is potentially decisive for Cardiff after their failure to beat West Brom. Palace, though, are a tough outfit who look like they have more belief after a huge win over Chelsea.
Prediction: 1-2
Hull v Swansea
The Swans have struggled away from home recently and that gives Hull the edge as these two clubs try to inch away from the danger zone. They should both be fine.
Prediction: 2-0
Newcastle v Man Utd
With the Toon phoning it in and United rediscovering some pluck after their gritty 1-1 draw at home to Bayern, this looks like an away win.
Prediction: 0-2
Norwich v West Brom
The Canaries players reimbursed fans for their tickets to the defeat to Swansea in a hope that will get them on their side, back amid the comforts of Carrow Road. It’s a shrewd move, especially given how abject they’ve been at times this season. The Baggies are looking incredibly nervy themselves, though.
Prediction: 2-1
Chelsea v Stoke
1:30pm
With a Champions League night to awaken their senses and the pain of their Palace defeat still fresh, Stoke will be well aware of the dangers of going to the Bridge right now.
Prediction: 3-0
SUNDAY
Everton v Arsenal
9:30am
Five straight wins from Everton has put them in with a good chance of snatching fourth place away from the Gunners, which would be a disaster for Arsene Wenger’s side. With a game in hand, the Toffees can put themselves in pole position to do just that with a win.
Prediction: 2-1
West Ham v Liverpool
12pm
Likely to be a tougher challenge than the one put up, if that’s not a contradiction in terms, by Spurs. West Ham and Andy Carroll will test the Reds’ backline, for sure. If Liverpool can deal with that, they should extend their winning run to nine.
Prediction: 0-2
MONDAY
Tottenham v Sunderland
4pm
Sunderland keep leaving Adam Johnson on the bench... and keep losing. Suddenly the games in hand don’t look that comforting.
Prediction: 2-0
