Swansea earned a fabulous 3-0 away win at Valencia in the Europa League last night.
The Welsh side show no nerves in the Mestalla and, although helped by the ninth-minute sending off of the home side’s Adil Ram, the Premier League side were convincing winners.
Goals from Wilfried Bony, Spaniard Michu and Jonathan de Guzman, with a superb 30-yeard free-kick were too much for Valencia, whose new manager Miroslav Djukic is under severe pressure after a poor start to the season.
Swans boss Michael Laudrup told the media after the match: “It was a fantastic game. Of course the red card was an influence — but we dominated from the first minute to the last.
“It could have been more than three and I’m very pleased to beat a club like Valencia. It was our fifth game in Europe — and we were facing a big team.
“But I’m just so pleased for everyone. Not just the fans, but for the players as well. It is great to see that even if we have players without international experience, then there is no problem.
“We had a lot of fans here and I’m sure they had a night to remember.
These are great experiences, and to win the first game in the group is a fantastic start.”
The other English clubs in action in Europa League were Wigan Athletic, who drew 0-0 away at Zulte-Waregem in Belgium.
Spurs, meanwhile, made light work of Tromso, of Sweden, winning 3-0 thanks to a double from Jermain Defoe and Christian Eriksen.
Defoe said: “It’s a case of getting out there and working hard for the team.
“If you can score it’s nice but I just want to work hard for the team.
“The new lads are brilliant and it was a good win.”
In the night’s early games, Fiorentina strolled past Pacos Ferreira 3-0, while PSV Eindhoven were shocked 2-0 at home to Ludoorets Razgrad, a Bulgariuan club who were formed only in 2001. n
