Is this a sign of the future?
New signs have been erected on the outskirts of Hamilton outlining new car parking charges.
At present the new signs along Elliott Street are covered with black bin bags.
But the wording on the signs states that the areas around the sign are to become ‘voucher parking’ areas.
It is unclear when these new charges will take effect or what other parts of town will be affected by the changes.
The Bermuda Sun contacted the Corporation to ask for further details about when the new charges would be implemented. But Edward Benevides, Chief Operating Office and Secretary to the City of Hamilton said: “The City of Hamilton continually looks at ways to improve parking in the City.
New regulations
“The City of Hamilton will launch a full and comprehensive communications campaign which will explain the new parking regulations and how it will impact motorists.
“The parking changes will be rolled out over a period of weeks, giving motorists details of changes beforehand.”
In response to questions about reports of increased car clamping in the car park next to the Gosling’s offices between Dundonald Street and Elliot Street, Mr Benevides added: “The clamping of cars in city car parks has been in effect since 2007.
“It is anticipated that a new ordinance will be published in the next week or so which will improve parking in the city.”
Earlier this summer the Bermuda Sun revealed that charges for bikes and the expansion of paid parking across Hamilton were among proposals being mulled at City Hall.
One of the goals of the initiative was said to be to deter rogue motorists who use residential parking bays. n
