Digicel has applied for planning permission to erect a mobile cellphone tower in Sandy’s. The move comes just weeks after the Bermuda Sun revealed the company had been taken to task by planners for setting up an antenna on Greenfield Lane without the correct planning permission.

Earlier this month a planning spokesperson told us: “Erection of the structure is considered ‘development’ under the Development and Planning Act 1974 and, as such, it requires planning permission.

“The breach is the failure to get planning permission.”

The infraction sparked concerns among some neighbours who contacted the Department of Planning when the antennae arrived on the site without warning earlier this summer.

Now Digicel has officially applied for planning permission for the structure, which was removed from the site last week. The application, which was published last Friday, states: “Proposed application to install a Cell-Site on Wheels (C.O.W.) with a tower height of 65ft to a max height of 100ft, BELCO meter and emergency.”

Residents have until November 8 to object to the application.
